How to Avoid Paint Chipping

Have you ever painted a room and noticed paint chips? Or have you recently bought a home that has peeling paint? At first glance, you may not notice these small paint specs as they fall. But eventually, over time, the paint on the wall will come off more and more. Never let this happen to your walls. Instead, check out this guide on how to avoid paint chipping.

Remove Problem Areas

If your paint is chipping, it is most likely due to a problem area. You will need to remove all the peeling paint. Grab a scraper and get to scraping. Depending on the area, it can take a few minutes to a few hours. When you are scraping, you do not want to put too much pressure on the scraper. It can damage the surface of the wall.

Create a Smooth Area

Now that you have the problem areas gone, it is time to create a smooth surface. If the area is rigid or rough, you can sand it down to make a smooth surface. A rough surface can not only cause your paint to chip but can vary your paint drying time. If you struggle with smoothing the area down, call a home service team to help you out.

Clean the Surface

Before you paint, you need to clean your surface (aka the walls). Never paint on dirty walls. Dirt can cause uneven surfaces or hold in bacteria or mold. The best way to clean your walls is to grab a clean rag and wipe. You can get a duster as well, but make sure to thoroughly clean the duster before and after you use it.

Paint with Moderate Weather

Not many people know this, but paint applies and dries the best under moderate weather. Too much moisture or heat can change the consistency of the paint. Heat can also affect paint. If the weather is too hot, it can cause the paint to bubble. Humid or moist environments can cause it to run or drip before it fully dries. If you live in an area where you cannot avoid the climate, then purchase paint that works the best with your environment.

Prime the Walls

The last step you will take before painting is to prime your walls. Primer seals up small holes on the surface of walls that would allow moisture to enter. It also lets the paint stick properly to the wall, which in turn, would keep the paint long-lasting. Make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when applying the paint. You will also need to make sure it is dry completely before applying your first coat of paint.

Never let the paint on your walls chip. Instead, by following the tips above, your paint can last a long time.
