We are finally hitting the season where temperatures continue to drop. And as it gets colder and colder, more plants wither and die. If you have a passion for gardening, this time of year may bring you down, but that doesn’t mean you can’t stop doing what you love. Instead, now’s the time to learn how to garden indoors. Keep reading to learn how.
Research
Before you even begin gardening, you must do your research. You need to learn what plants do well indoors, how much light and water these plants need and how to maintain them. Plants like beets, carrots, herbs, kale and more do great inside. Once you’ve done your research, it’s time to get your supplies.
Stock up on Supplies
You can’t start an indoor garden without the right supplies. The supplies that you need are grow lights, growing containers, soil and seeds. When looking for growing containers, you are going to want to have different sizes. All plants grow at different speeds and lengths. You want to make sure you have enough room in your pots. You will also want to stick to plastic containers because they will not rot or break as your plants grow.
Find the Right Area
Location is key when it comes to your indoor plants. Some plants will need an ample amount of sunlight, while others only need small or minimal amounts. This is where your research comes to play. You do not want to purchase or grow plants in an area that will end up killing them. Once you find your plant’s place, make sure to clean it and that there is enough room.
Use High-Quality Soil
Just like humans and pets, plants need quality food to survive. While you can use garden soil, many gardeners recommend using a potting mix for indoor plants. These potting mixes have vermiculite and perlite, which helps with drainage. Gardening soil is sterile and can have fungus and bacteria, which can cause deformities or kill them.
Start Planting
Once you have everything above done, it is time to start planting. This step is the most fun yet the most work. While planting, make sure to wear clothes that you are okay getting messy. And have a broom or vacuum on hand once you finish potting your plant.
